Tapered roller bearings are suitable for large radial loads as well as large axial loads in one direction. The combined pair of bearings can be axially loaded in both directions. The directions of the forces transmitted from one ring to the other form an angle with the plane perpendicular to the axis of the bearing, called the contact angle. Due to the contact angle, the radial load of the tapered bearing creates an internal axial force in it, which must be in balance with the corresponding counterforce. Therefore, a second bearing must be mounted against this bearing to the axial line in the opposite direction.
